Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Electrical Superintendent to lead and oversee all electrical repair, installation, troubleshooting, and commissioning activities for commercial vessels at a Great Lakes shipyard in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. This position requires a proven leader with extensive marine electrical experience who can manage multiple projects, supervise skilled trades personnel, and ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards.  The Electrical Superintendent will coordinate with project management, production, engineering, and customers to deliver successful ship repair projects while maintaining schedule, budget, and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise all electrical work associated with commercial vessel repair and modernization projects.
  • Lead teams of marine electricians, subcontractors, and support personnel to ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, and within budget.
  • Assign manpower, monitor productivity, and adjust staffing to meet project demands.
  • Read and interpret electrical drawings, one-line diagrams, ship specifications, wiring schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Oversee installation, repair, troubleshooting, testing, and commissioning of marine electrical systems, including: Power generation and distribution systems Switchboards and motor control centers Navigation and communication equipment Lighting systems Alarm and monitoring systems Propulsion support systems HVAC electrical controls
  • Coordinate lockout/tagout procedures and ensure compliance with all electrical safety standards.
  • Conduct daily planning meetings and maintain effective communication with project managers, customers, and other trades.
  • Monitor project schedules, labor hours, material usage, and equipment needs.
  • Ensure all work complies with applicable OSHA, USCG, ABS, and customer requirements.
  • Perform quality inspections and verify completed work prior to turnover.
  • Mentor and develop electrical personnel while promoting continuous improvement and teamwork.
  • Assist with estimating labor requirements, planning future work, and identifying opportunities for improved efficiency.

Required Qualifications

  • Prior experience working in a commercial shipyard is required.
  • Minimum of 7 years of marine electrical experience, including supervisory or superintendent-level responsibilities.
  • Extensive experience performing electrical repairs on commercial vessels operating in the Great Lakes or similar marine environments.
  • Strong working knowledge of marine electrical systems, AC/DC power distribution, generators, motors, transformers, switchgear, automation, and control systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and ship specifications.
  • Experience coordinating multiple work crews and managing complex repair schedules.
  • Thorough understanding of OSHA regulations, NFPA 70E electrical safety practices, confined space entry, and lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Strong leadership, communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and production management software.
  • High school diploma or GED required; technical degree or apprenticeship completion preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Licensed Master Electrician or Journeyman Electrician (preferred but not required).
  • Experience with U.S. Coast Guard, ABS, or other classification society requirements.
  • Experience with vessel dry dockings, emergency repairs, and ship modernization projects.
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification.
  • Experience with programmable logic controllers (PLCs), variable frequency drives (VFDs), and marine automation systems.
