Steel Fitter – Sturgeon Bay, WI

Job Description

We are seeking experienced Steel Fitters to join our shipyard team in Sturgeon Bay, WI. Steel Fitters will be responsible for fitting, aligning, cutting, beveling, and assembling heavy structural steel used in the construction and repair of commercial vessels.

Key Responsibilities

  • Fit and assemble structural steel, bulkheads, decks, frames, stiffeners, brackets, and other ship structures.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, structural drawings, weld symbols, and measurements.
  • Perform 7018 stick welding (SMAW) for tack welding and structural applications.
  • Use an oxyacetylene cutting torch to cut, bevel, and wash 1" thick steel plate.
  • Accurately cut and prepare weld bevels to required dimensions.
  • Align and position heavy steel components using clamps, come-alongs, wedges, jacks, and other fitting tools.
  • Grind, clean, and prepare steel surfaces for welding.
  • Take accurate measurements and maintain proper fit-up and alignment.
  • Work safely around cranes, rigging, welding operations, and heavy steel.

Required Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a Steel Fitter, Shipfitter, Structural Fitter, or Marine Fitter.
  • Must be proficient in 7018 stick welding.
  • Must be proficient with an oxyacetylene cutting torch.
  • Must be able to cut and bevel 1" thick steel plate using an oxyacetylene cutting torch.
  • Must understand proper weld joint preparation and fit-up.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, weld symbols, and measurements.
  • Experience fitting heavy structural steel in a shipyard or industrial environment preferred.
  • Must have basic hand tools required for steel fitting.
  • Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and in various shipboard positions.

Preferred Experience

  • Commercial shipbuilding or ship repair experience.
  • Heavy structural steel fitting experience.
  • Proficiency with 7018 SMAW welding.
  • Experience cutting and beveling heavy plate with an oxyacetylene torch.
  • Experience with cranes, rigging, and large steel assemblies.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a skilled shipyard steel fitter who can independently perform structural fit-up, 7018 stick welding, and oxyacetylene cutting and beveling of 1" steel plate. Candidates should be safety-conscious, dependable, and experienced in the demanding environment of commercial ship construction and repair.
