Structural Welder (1st Class FCAW Shipyard Welder)

Position Overview

We are seeking experienced 1st Class Structural Welders for a heavy shipyard construction project. Candidates must have extensive experience with Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW) and ceramic tape backing while producing high-quality structural welds in all welding positions. Successful candidates must demonstrate exceptional welding skills, pass required testing, and work safely in a fast-paced shipbuilding environment.

Responsibilities

• Perform structural welding using the Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW) process.
• Weld structural steel in the flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions.
• Complete full-penetration welds utilizing ceramic tape backing.
• Read and interpret blueprints, weld symbols, and approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).
• Produce welds that meet shipyard quality standards and project specifications.
• Safely operate, inspect, troubleshoot, and maintain welding machines and related equipment.
• Perform work in accordance with all shipyard safety policies and OSHA regulations.
• Work effectively with supervisors, fitters, inspectors, and fellow tradespeople to meet production schedules.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area while demonstrating quality workmanship and attention to detail.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of Shipyard structural welding experience, preferably in heavy shipbuilding, ship repair, or heavy industrial fabrication.
• Current hands-on experience with Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW).
• Current experience using ceramic tape backing.
• Proven knowledge and proficiency in heavy shipyard structural welding in all welding positions.
• Ability to read and interpret approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), blueprints, and weld symbols.
• Strong knowledge of welding equipment, proper setup, basic troubleshooting, and routine maintenance.
• Ability to consistently produce high-quality welds that meet inspection requirements.
• Strong commitment to workplace safety and quality standards.

Required Testing

All candidates must successfully complete:

• 1st Class Structural Welder Skill Test

Applicants must demonstrate the ability to perform structural FCAW welds in accordance with shipyard quality requirements and approved welding procedures.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to stand, bend, kneel, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces and at heights.
• Ability to work overtime and various shifts as required.
• Must be able to wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE).
